Broadway Center

Sacramento, CA
Year built: 1985

Bruce took a foray into commercial real estate in the mid 80’s with the building of Broadway Center, a 4-store strip mall at the corner of 28th and Broadway. He couldn’t have asked for a better business partner to team up with than the award winning filmmaker and veritable genius Mark Magidson, famous for the visually stunning films Samsara and Baraka. As it turns out, Mark was Bruce’s long time friend since grade school, and it was before he was busy being a famous filmmaker anyways.

They designed, built, and rented four stores, Foster’s Freeze, Precision Hair Design, Broadway Check Cashing, and Broadway Wash & Dry. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly, until Bruce decided to operate Broadway Wash & Dry against the better judgment of his partner. Bruce was not equipped to handle the amount of time and effort that goes into such a venture and by the time it was all said and done he was happy to be rid of it. Lesson learned, when Mark Magidson tells you its a bad idea, you better listen. They eventually sold the strip mall in 1995 and considered it a marginal success.
