The Grove at Johnston Park is an affordable housing community set against a beautiful backdrop of a tree lined park in North Sacramento. The location itself has improved both in safety and livability since Bruce bought the property in 1990. This is partially attributed to the purchasing of the adjacent parking lot by Bruce which once was a common hangout for gangs. The land now functions as a much needed parking lot for the Grove’s residents, and has provided the dual function of additional security. Enormous improvements to the property are scheduled for construction in 2021 aimed at building vibrant, safe communities.
The first major upgrade will be creating spacious 15′ porches in front of the upstairs units. The porches will be covered with metal roofs to protect from weather conditions and open on the sides to let in the breezes. The porches will be connected by walkways to provide an inviting environment to interact with your neighbors. This will also add additional safety exits in case of a fire or natural disaster.
As the residents step onto their new porches they will be able to get of glimpse of our next construction project, the new courtyards. Two new courtyards, also slated for construction in 2021, will serve as outdoor community centers equipped with barbecues, picnic areas, and night lighting. Hundreds of native plants and trees will be planted in and around the courtyards to bring in the elements of nature to this communal area.
Lastly, the residents themselves will be getting upgraded kitchens and bathrooms. The walls of the kitchens will be opened up to conform to today’s standards and to increase the spacious feel of the apartments. The bathrooms will also be upgraded to today’s standards and will further enhance the feeling that this is not just an apartment but a home within a thriving community. We predict the aesthetic and functional upgrades will go far to create a pride in ones home, that will have lasting impacts on the lives of our residents.
