AKA What the heck are they talking about?
Transformational housing is for persons who are working to overcome homelessness. The project provides housing, support and resources only to those who show a commitment to gaining self-sufficiency. The individual needs are supported for a period of time while they transition out of homelessness.
Transformational Housing Residents:
- Have a goal to work or attend school for at least 30 hours per week
- Meet with Case Managers regularly to establish short and long-term goals
- Participate in life skills classes: money management, parenting, conflict resolution, etc.
Supportive Housing assists and empowers people to live as independently as possible. Some supportive housing programs only assist families with whom one member of the family has a disability. Supportive housing provides a starting point for pursuing goals, restoring spirit, and building self-reliance.
Case managers work with adult participants to achieve the following goals:
- Remain in (or exit to) permanent housing
- Increase skills and/or income
- Achieve greater self-determination
- Achieve financial stability
Types of support include:
- Community health and awareness
- Eviction prevention
- Financial literacy
- House our heroes
- Leadership and development
- Youth pathways
Housing First
The policy of “Housing First” was initiated in New York City in the 1990’s. It became best practice nationwide. The definition of Housing First has changed over time and is controversial. Primarily Housing First aims to place people in reliable housing before offering services. The policy includes support services such as treatment, rehabilitation, and job placement, only after a home has been provided. The controversy stems from the change that services should be linked to housing vouchers or supportive placement. Advocates now understand that services and housing must be linked together.
HUD-VASH is a supportive housing program run by the VA, the Veterans Administration. The program relies on a Housing First model but provides extensive services and requires the veterans’ involvement with a case worker. It has been credited with helping to dramatically reduce the homeless veteran population.
Magnolia Suites has proven to be a favorite and welcoming apartment home choice for Sacramento veterans in the VASH program. It works.
